A member of the mint family, sage is an evergreen shrub native to the sunny, arid slopes of Southern California.

For centuries, sage has been a revered botanical for many Native American tribes. The aromatic plant has a history of traditional uses for both its healthful qualities and ceremonial uses.

Unfortunately, Salvia Apianaare is at risk of extinction. So to ensure our pieces are cultivated with this in mind, we’ve paired with Mountain Rose Herb, who is dedicated to growing their products ethically, and simultaneously supporting small, local farmers.

It is believed that burning sage clears out spiritual impurities, pathogens, insects, and even the air of pet dander, pollution, dust, and mold.

Smudging has long been used to connect to the spiritual realm, and enhance intuition. For healers in traditional cultures, burning sage is used to achieve a mental state to solve or reflect upon spiritual dilemmas.

Smudging may also be used ritualistically to rid you, or your space, of negativity. This includes past traumas, bad experiences, or negative energies from others. Helping to establish a positive environment can help you to let go of negative thoughts, setting intention and dedication for self improvement.

For some, the best benefit of all is the lovely aroma emitted while burning sage. It works great as a chemical-free air freshener or odor controller.

To Ignite:
- Light the end of the bundle for 30 seconds.
- Blow out the flame so that the leaves begin to smoke.
- Lightly fan the bundle to encourage an even burn and release the fragrance.

Prior to burning sage, some recommend setting intentions if you are smudging for spiritual, energetic, and negativity cleansing purposes. Additionally, remove all animals and people from the room to get into the mindset. It’s important to leave a window open before and after smudging to allow the smoke to escape. It is believed the smoke takes the negative energy with it, so make sure you keep this step in mind.

Smudge Your Home:
-After lighting, direct sage smoke over all surfaces around your home and living area. Be thorough. Some recommend walking in a clockwise position around your home, but do what feels best for your situation and follow your intention.

Smudge An Object or Person:
Direct smoke around and over the object of your choice. This can be done to a new item, such as jewelry or furniture, to dispel it of any negative energy. Some burn sage over special objects to acknowledge its association with a sacral meaning.

Aromatherapy:
Light and burn sage in your home to improve odor, fragrance, and mood. Place the bundle in a fireproof bowl after burning, and allow it to smoke for a while.

To Extinguish:
- When you are finished smudging, ensure your stick is completely extinguished by dabbing the lit end into a fireproof bowl of ash or sand.
- Once completely out, store it in a dry place away from the sun.

Tips:
- Never leave burning sage unattended.
- Setting off smoke alarms is common when burning sage, so consider this possibility when smudging in a public building.
- People with asthma and other respiratory conditions could be more sensitive to the smoke.
- Always leave a window open while smudging.
